Landscape Video is Finally Coming to IGTV, At Long Last-November 2024
Nov 20, 2024 10:26 PM

Fans of Instagram and IGTV will be pleased to learn that native landscape video is finally coming to the platform, as announced in an official press release.

Instagram launchedIGTV as a way to bring higher quality video content to the masses in a vertical video format. Quite frankly, the push has been nothing short of phenomenal, at least for me as I watch a ton of content without having to flip my phone around, just like Stories. But today, Instagram has announced that it is going to evolve the platform, based on user feedback, and landscape video support is finally here.

What this means is that creators now have the option to upload a video straight to IGTV in landscape format and all you have to do is flip your phone around in order to enjoy what's on screen. Obviously, vertical content option still exists for those who want it that way, which is a big win in my opinion.

To put things into perspective, this move from Instagram is similar to how the company allowed photos and videos other than the square format for people to consume in the timeline. This change allowed everyone to become far more creative in what they post on Instagram, ultimately increasing user engagement as well.

From Instagram:

We realize this is an evolution from where IGTV started – we believe it’s the right change for viewers and creators. In many ways, opening IGTV to more than just vertical videos is similar to when we opened Instagram to more than just square photos in 2015. It enabled creativity to flourish and engagement to rise – and we believe the same will happen again with IGTV.

At the time of writing, there are a ton of landscape content available on IGTV which one can come across. But of course, without native landscape support, the video controls remain in the portrait position which forcing you to flip your phone around - not exactly ideal in any way. Now though, thanks to the newly announced changes, IGTV users can jump right in and flip their phones around whenever they see a landscape video and the controls will adjust accordingly too.
