iOS 9 Using Up Too Much Cellular Data? Here’s How To Fix The Issue-September 2024

If iOS 9 is using up too much cellular data on your iPhone or iPad, then here's what you need to do to fix the issue once and for all.

iOS 9 security

Many users are complaining around the globe that iOS 9 is using way too much cellular data even when connected to a WiFi network. The problem can be traced to a stock feature in iOS 9 itself, called 'Wi-Fi Assist.' The way the feature works is actually quite interesting and can be handy in a lot of situations, or even become a problem.

Wi-Fi Assist, when enabled, allows your iPhone or cellular iPad to switch over to a cellular data network in the background if iOS 9 feels that your connected WiFi network is losing its grip on good signal. This ensures that you get a good and streamlined data connection, so you don't lose out on productivity. However, when the whole WiFi to cellular switching takes place, you obviously incur some serious data cost, provided that you don't have a data plan at hand. In order to stop iOS 9 from using up your cellular data, subsequently saving your pocket when it comes to data cost, here's what you need to do.

Turn Off Wi-Fi Assist On iPhone, iPad

1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Now tap on the option at the top labelled 'Cellular.'

3. Scroll all the way down and you should see an option labelled 'Wi-Fi Assist.' Simply move the toggle switch next to it to the OFF position.

With Wi-Fi Assist now turned off, your device will not switch over to a cellular data network even if the WiFi network you're connected to has a week signal. This in turn means that you won't pile up a nasty data bill at the end of the month.

It's rather surprising that Wi-Fi Assist is a feature that is turned on by default. We really wished it was an opt-in feature rather than something which is forced onto users who don't realize the consequences it might bring to the fore.

With the above mentioned guide, you now know how to turn Wi-Fi Assist off and can finally rest easy knowing the fact that you won't take a data centric hit on your pocket. Furthermore, if you want to turn Wi-Fi Assist on once again, simply follow the above listed steps again and turn the 'Wi-Fi Assist' to the ON position. Simple as that.
