Huawei Believes It Can Overtake Apple in Smartphone Sales Next Year-February 2024
Feb 4, 2025 10:06 PM

Huawei has claimed that it is ready to overtake Apple in smartphones sales at some point next year. This seems to be a tall claim given the fact that the Chinese smartphone maker only managed to sell 153millionsmartphones in 2017 against Apple’s 215million shipment tally.

Huawei Mobile Chief Is Optimistic That the Chinese Giant Will Be Able to Sell Around 200 Million Devices by End of This Year

Huawei’s mobile head Richard Yu Chengdong said yesterday that it is expected to sell 200millionsmartphones by the end of this year and at this pace, itwill help it overtake Apple’s flat sales by some point next year. His optimism was fueled by the fact that it took the company about 6 months to reach this year’s target and he is hoping that 200 million units will be sold by the end of 2018.Yumade these statements during a product launch.

Huawei calculates its global smartphone shipments by combing both Huawei and Honor smartphones. However, keep in mind that Apple is able to sell millions of devices by only releasing a total of three models, two of which carried the same previous-gen design language. Even though the smartphone market has become stagnant, Huawei was able to maintain its fast growth momentum.

Huawei has witnessed strong growth in India, a market Apple is still struggling with. Three of the company’s executives left as it only managed to sell 1millionunits in India so far for the 2018period. Its market share last year was nearly 2percent, indicating a very poor level of performance. The company has recently started manufacturing the iPhone 6 in India, with the iPhone SE already being made there to avoid taxes on imported itemsas well as to encourage a higher adoption of the iPhone lineup amongst the masses.

Huawei briefly surpassed Apple one quarter in 2017, but that was in the second quarter before the release of the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.Additionally,Huawei is also eyeing the MacBook market. However, these claims are unlikely to ruffle Apple’s feathers as the company accounts for a major chunk of the industry's profits, with the iPhone X alone raking in more than a third of the total industry profit.

You should also keep in mind that Huawei sells a boatload of models around the globe and at various prices, allowing the Chinese giant to accumulate a massive market in various countries.
