Here's how you can convert images in HEIC to JPEG in Preview for Mac in a few easy steps. Do this for maximum compatibility.
Convert Your HEIC Images to JPEG Before Sending Them off to Someone for Maximum Compatibility Across Devices and Platforms
Apple made the wild jump to HEIC and HEVC for photo and video formats in order to deliver the same quality to users but with a smaller footprint. This means that if you have a device with smaller internal storage then you are going to fit in (almost) twice as much photos and videos. The downside to this? HEIC and HEVC aren't quite popular file formats outside the Apple ecosystem. So if you send someone an HEIC photo, they might actually have a hard time viewing it. But don't worry, if you are using a Mac, we will show you how to convert HEIC to JPEG file format in a matter of seconds. It's a super easy process and something everyone should know about.
Tutorial
Step 1. Open the image in HEIC file format in Preview. Right click on the image, hover your mouse over Open With then click on Preview.
Step 2. Click on File in the menu bar.
Step 3. Now click on Export.
Step 4. Under the Format drop-down menu, select JPEG. Please refer to the screenshot below as well.
Step 5. Now click on Save.
That's about it, you've saved your image in the JPEG file format, all set to be sent t someone else with maximum compatibility.
You do have the option to shoot photos and videos on your iPhone and iPad using the standard photo and video formats. They will offer the same quality as HEIC and HEVC but will take up double the storage. The only thing great here is that you don't have to worry about conversion if you are emailing the photos and videos from your Mac. If you are doing it from your iPhone or iPad directly, then iOS and iPadOS will do the conversion from HEIC to JPEG for you before sending them out to someone.
