Google Outs Android’s September Security Bulletin, Factory Images and OTAs Awaited
Google Outs Android’s September Security Bulletin, Factory Images and OTAs Awaited-October 2024
Oct 17, 2024 8:26 PM

Google has released the September 2017 Android security bulletin with general information about the vulnerabilities affecting Android devices.

Factory images and OTAs for the month will probably take care of all the said vulnerabilities, but they are only available for Nexus 9 on Android 7.1.1. For now, Google has not added Android 8.0 Oreo images and OTAs with September patch for Nexus and Pixel devices, but we can expect that to be updated soon.

For those interested in knowing about the issues that have been discovered and tackled, can take a look at the security bulletin here. Google has listed the most severe vulnerabilities affecting the media framework of the device and enabling remote access to the device through a special file. All these vulnerabilities make it important for the patches to be installed on the Nexus and Pixel devices. Other devices need to rely on their manufacturer to push an update with these fixes promptly. There are two security patch level strings in the update, which enables OEMs with ease to fix the vulnerabilities that are similar across devices.

Google Play Protect: Fighting like a pro

In the September security bulletin, Google has also explained the importance of Google Play Protect in ensuring the safety of the device:

Exploitation for many issues is made more difficult by enhancements in newer versions of the Android platform. We encourage all users to update to the latest version of Android where possible. The Android security team actively monitors for abuse through Google Play Protect and warns users about Potentially Harmful Applications. Google Play Protect is enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services, and is especially important for users who install apps from outside of Google Play.

You can check out this page for factory images and this page for OTA files whenever Google uploads factory images and OTA files. We will also be updating this article with the direct links to OTA files and images once they go live. Anyway, Nexus and Pixel owners need not worry about it as their device will start getting the patch as an over-the-air update shortly.
