Consumer Reports to Retest the 2016 MacBook Pro for Further Battery Life Insights
Consumer Reports to Retest the 2016 MacBook Pro for Further Battery Life Insights-April 2024
Apr 19, 2025 1:13 AM

Previously, Consumer Reports got its hands on all three 2016 MacBook Pro models but failed to give them a recommendation on account that all notebooks failed to excel in the one feature that was given praise over and over again to the MacBook Pro family: the battery life. Consumer Reports is now going to be carrying out a retesting phase to make sure that the MacBook Pro was really able to deliver their claims of high battery life.

Looks Like Consumer Reports Must Have Sat With Apple’s Executives That They Decided to Test These the Notebooks Again

The latest development provides further insight to the fact it that there wasn’t a flaw in the Consumer Report’s methodology that was creating the problem. Instead, Apple has potentially found a bug that negatively impacted CR’s test results, forcing them not to deliver a positive recommendation to any consumer who wanted to make the upgrade. What this means is that Consumer Reports is definitely going to perform separate tests on all new MacBook Pro models again and see if anything has changed. Synopsis of the findings have been stated below:

“Apple has just issued a software fix through its Beta Software Program to address an issue that arose when the company's new MacBook Pro laptops were being tested in Consumer Reports' labs. Although those computers performed well in tests of display quality, performance, and other factors, we found the battery life to be so variable on the models tested that we could not recommend them to consumers. In our tests of three different MacBook Pro models, we saw battery life results as long as 19.5 hours and as short as 3.75 hours.”

Previously, the tests involved three different models; a 13-inch one that comes without the Touch Bar, the 13-inch one that comes with the Touch Bar and the 15-inch model. The products were purchased from a retail outlet so that they are able to draw up the closest results of a product that a regular customer would purchase from the store. However, what followed next was quite disappointing, especially when the battery life tests were carried.

“The MacBook Pro battery life results were highly inconsistent from one trial to the next. For instance, in a series of three consecutive tests, the 13-inch model with the Touch Bar ran for 16 hours in the first trial, 12.75 hours in the second, and just 3.75 hours in the third. The 13-inch model without the Touch Bar worked for 19.5 hours in one trial but only 4.5 hours in the next. And the numbers for the 15-inch laptop ranged from 18.5 down to 8 hours.”

Hopefully this time, the results don’t display a huge disparity and Consumer Reports is actually able to give a different recommendation.
