ATi Radeon 5800 Series launching tomorrow
ATi Radeon 5800 Series launching tomorrow-December 2024
Dec 28, 2024 3:04 AM

In case you already don't know, tomorrow is the official date for the AMD's DirectX 11 GPUs to hit the streets. Contradicting its initial plans, AMD will launch only the top end 5800 series graphic cards tomorrow, while subsequent series will be launch in the coming weeks. I have all the juicy details about the new cards here so make sure you clock through.

At launch, AMD will only be offering the ATI Radeon 5870 and the ATI Radeon 5850 cards based on the RV870 chip - now known as Cypress. These new GPUs will be a part of the Evergreen lineup by AMD which is the codename for their R800 graphics architecture. These new chips have the following features common to them:

DirectX 11 SupportOpenGL 3.2 capableDirectCompute and OpenCL support for General Purpose GPU programmingUnified Video Decoder (UVD2) and ATI PowerPlayAMD Eyefinity Support

While DirectX 11 support wasn't something we didn't already know about, the recently unveiled AMD Eyefinity technology was pretty awesome. What's more is that these GPUs would come in two flavors packing 1GB and 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Theoretically, a Radeon 5850 can perform slightly better than a Radeon 4850 X2, and over twice as fast as the Radeon 4850 for just two quarters of the power. The Radeon 5870 has even higher numbers than that though the single GPU power has gone up to 188W compared to 150W from the previous generation.

Both cards will enter the market at prices around $299 and $399 for the 1GB versions respectively. The cheaper Radeon 5700 series will follow with the official Windows 7 launch on October 22. We'll have more details as the cards actually set foot on the streets.
