Camera quality and smartphone advancements have begun to go more hand in hand as we progress towards the future. Processor, design, display and camera quality have started to become a standard at which a flagship smartphone device is gauged at, and to ensure that they stay at the top of the food chain, every manufacturer focuses on these key components for success. And with LG launching the G4 with some impressive camera specifications, more word has started to surface about Apple's plans for a dual camera system for the iPhone.

Looks like folks over at Cupertino are getting pretty serious for more than one camera on its future devices. Some patents uncovered from the US Patents and Trademark Office detail Apple's plans for a telephoto lens to go alongside the standard camera lens found on iPhones. For those of you out of the loop, a telephoto lens is generally used for long distance photography, and allows the user to capture enlarged images of objects at a long distance. The physical length of the lens is expected to be shorter than its focal length for it to be classified as a telephoto lens.

However capturing distant images isn't the only function of a telephoto lens. It also allows for a better sense of scale and better accommodation of multiple subjects in a single shot. Apple's proposed telephoto solution for the iPhone suggests for multiple lenses to be used, similar to the current camera system found on the iPhone, alongside 1.2 micron pixels, focal length of 7mm and track length of 6mm or less. A telephoto lens on the iPhone would end up giving users more options for customization during photography and would also start a shift away from the camera on your iPhone simply being a very effective point and shoot solution. But given Apple's penchant for secrecy, we really can't say anything for sure right now. Stay tuned, we'll keep you updated.
