According to the company, "improvements" were made in order to reduce the unexpected shutdown issues on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s units. All together, the update reduced the shutdown issues by more than 70 percent on the iPhone 6 and over 80 percent on the iPhone 6s.

With iOS 10.2.1, Apple made improvements to reduce occurrences of unexpected shutdowns that a small number of users were experiencing with their iPhone. iOS 10.2.1 already has over 50% of active iOS devices upgraded and the diagnostic data we’ve received from upgraders shows that for this small percentage of users experiencing the issue, we’re seeing a more than 80% reduction in iPhone 6s and over 70% reduction on iPhone 6 of devices unexpectedly shutting down.

We also added the ability for the phone to restart without needing to connect to power, if a user still encounters an unexpected shutdown. It is important to note that these unexpected shutdowns are not a safety issue, but we understand it can be an inconvenience and wanted to fix the issue as quickly as possible. The iPhone-maker found sudden and unexpected spikes in the handsets activity that drew the maximum power output from the battery. Moreover, the batteries in the iPhone 6 and 6s failed to deliver power evenly that caused the devices to shut down unexpectedly. This forced users to plug their iPhones into a power outlet in order to turn their devices back on.

Even though Apple's release of iOS 10.2.1 greatly reduced the randomly shutting down of iPhone 6 and 6s, the problem still persists. However, as previously users had to plug in their iPhones to turn it back on, now users can simply restart their devices to bring them back to power.
