Apple Removes Iconic Startup Chime on 2016 MacBook Pro – Here’s How to Enable it-April 2024

One of the most iconic features of the Mac is its startup chime. The startup chime is part of the Mac since 1980s and now, Apple seems to be removing the distinctive sound. The aged old tradition of a startup chime has been completely removed from the new 2016 MacBook Pro models. However, there's a workaround which will allow you to enable it.

Apple Removed the Iconic Mac Startup Chime with 2016 MacBook - Don't Panic, You Can Get it Back

The removal of the startup chime is justified by MacBooks turning on automatically and silently. It also enables the automatic boot feature to be included which will allow for a silentboot up process. However, if you want to enable the new feature, follow this simple workaround.

The process is really simple and the only operation you have to do is go to the Terminal and type in the command written below.

sudo nvramBootAudio=%01

That's all you haveto do to enable the startup chime on your new 2016 MacBook Pro models. Moreover, if you plan on turning it off again, go to Terminal again and type the following command.

sudonvram BootAudio=%00

This will turn the startup chime back on again. Since all the commands are done using SUDO, you will be required to enter your administrative password. Nonetheless, the operation is pretty simple and it gets the job done.

The automatic boot feature is available on all new MacBook Pros. Another justification for the removal of the startup chime could be to eliminate the process of pressing the power button. So as long as you have sufficient battery life, the new MacBook Pros will turn on automatically as you open the lid. This makes sense since the new MacBook Pros do not come with a Power button.

The 2016 MacBook Pros were announced at the company's 'Hello Again' event last week. Moreover, the 13-inch 2016 MacBook Pro model without a Touch Bar is already available at many retailers. MacBook Pros with Touch Bar will be available in stores in the next few weeks.

So if you like the Mac startup chime and are devastated for its redundancy, you can enable it through the simple workaround mentioned above.

This is it for now, folks. What do you think about the removal of the Mac startup chime? Do you think it should have stayed alongside the automatic boot up process? Let us know in the comments.
