The whole idea behind generating AI images using text prompts is something that we have seen for quite some time now. Although there have been several tools that do it, Stable Diffusion happens to be the one that a lot of people like. Now, Qualcomm has decided to show off the prowess of its chipset being able to generate an AI image within a matter of seconds, and if things go smoothly, you can expect it to come to Android phones in the future.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can create AI-generated image in less than 15 seconds without an internet connection
Using Stable Diffusion, Qualcomm created a 512x512 pixel image of a cat wearing an armor. This was achieved by using Qualcomm AI stack to run Stable Diffusion 1.5 on a smartphone without any internet connectivity. But what does the internet have to do with generating an AI image? Well, without any internet, the phone in question was in charge of generating the image using artificial intelligence.
Qualcomm even shared a video that you can look at below:
The image generated by the smartphone used the following prompt, "Super cute fluffy cat warrior in armor, photorealistic, 4K, ultra-detailed, Vray rendering, unreal engine." and well, you can have a look at the image below:
As far as the Qualcomm chipset that was able to perform this task, the company used a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the fastest chipset in the market for Android phones. The company has also made clear that the Stable Diffusion version they used was optimized for "quantization, compilation, and hardware acceleration."
While this might seem like something small but considering how up until now, smartphone processors were not considered powerful enough to generate AI content, this definitely is an impressive achievement. This could also mean that future Android smartphones could finally have a way of using Stable Fusion and other AI-related tools to generate all sorts of content, and considering how this was done without any internet connection, this means that all the data remains secure on the phone.
Sadly, at the time of writing, we don't know whether Qualcomm will bring this technology to all Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 supported devices or not but looking at the feature and how it works, it would be a huge missed opportunity if this does not come to smartphones.
